Truth in Pain's Clothing

One of the few reblogs I did with my tumblr account had a picture of a diary with the line, Better a cruel truth than a comfortable delusion.

We all have our own comforts of delusion we’d love to envelop ourselves in. S/he still loves me despite our breakup! We’re still together! But as I have discussed in my Precious Illusions entry last September, it doesn’t do us any good. Matter of fact, it even leaves us in a worse situation. Comfortable delusion is cruelty in sheep’s clothing since we lull ourselves with the untruth. And the longer the delusion lasts, the crueler the truth becomes when it finally unravels.

Pain will always be derivative when it comes to disconcerting truths. Thus, telling the truth immediately may hurt but it would not be as intense as telling it after a long period of the untruth. Also, isn’t it easier to forgive a person who has always been honest with you rather than somebody who you know has lied to you for some time?

The truth hurts because we realize that we are merely human, susceptible to err, to lie, and to pain, and that all of these are very much part of ourselves. But the truth also sets us free since it makes us realize that as human beings, we have the capacity to pursue the truth and what it is to become human.

The truth hurts but it does set us free. And in truth, we become more human.
