Brain/Heart/Gut

I have been an avid lurker of Survivor Sucks, a message board devoted primarily to Survivor but devotes discussion for other reality shows as well such as my current favorite, The Amazing Race. Years ago (I don’t know if they still continue this), posters would speculate who gets eliminated or booted a few days before the actual episode airs. They labeled their speculation based on its source. They used:

Brain - who logically should go
Heart - who they want to see go
Gut - who their instincts tell them will go

A comprehensive and clever depiction of our decision bases, I suppose.

It has been well-established that we decide either with our head or heart. We primarily decide based on how we think and/or feel. Difficult decisions often arise when the desires of these two clash. The typical “my heart says yes but my head says no” and vice versa dilemma. So how do we deal with such a dilemma? Should we then follow the logic of the mind more or the passion of the heart?

I don’t think it’s a question of which one to follow more. Some decisions are better made with the head than the heart while others vice versa. Actually, the most crucial decision falls on choosing which one leads you to a better outcome given the circumstances. How do we know how to decide? B/H…G. Your gut. What do your instincts tell you about the two paths you may traverse?

In the most difficult of decisions, follow your gut whether it says you should follow your head or heart. Though your gut may sometimes lead you to the wrong decision, you shouldn’t be traumatized. That’s how your gut works. Similar to the experience of posters never always getting the eliminated team right, you shouldn’t worry about bad decisions being made because at such point in time, your decision made the most perfect sense to your brain, heart and gut. The important thing is that you learn from your experience and you’d be able to discern better which one you should follow.

Thus, after reading this entry, here’s my speculation:

Brain: Listen to your B/H/G better for decisions!
Heart: Listen to your B/H/G better for decisions!
Gut: Listen to your B/H/G better for decisions!
